Studio City’s OyBar raises the bar for dive bars

For this week’s Finally Friday, Andy Riesmeyer and Samantha Cortese check out a new dive bar in the San Fernando Valley, an architectural masterpiece reopening in Los Angeles, and a roadside oyster bar in Ventura. .

  • OyBar is quickly becoming the hottest dive in the Valley, with food that leaves patrons wondering, “What did they do with what?” And does it taste so good? Chef and former comedian Jeff Strauss and head chef Kenya Bovey hope to convey their love for the diversity of Los Angeles cuisine in the shell of the former Oyster House.
  • Hollyhock House, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and Frank Lloyd Wright’s masterpiece, is finally back open to the public on August 18 after a massive restoration and pandemic closure. As well as the stunning preservation of Aline Barnsdall’s pop-up family home, you might want to add the sunset from the lawn at Barnsdall Art Park to your next date night. Visits are by appointment. Learn more about the grand reopening party on August 20 here.
  • Ventura locals and 101 day-trippers may know The Jolly Oyster. It has operated as one of the tastiest and most sustainable shellfish stands in California for 20 years. Find them in Ventura, Culver City or DTLA in Smorgasburg.
